Energy Location Wilhelmshaven


Energy is part of our heritage: for decades, the Wilhelmshaven region has been a key hub for the energy supply. We have always been the port of call for the very things that drive Germany and its industry. First for oil and gas, and now for electricity, generated sustainably through North Sea winds. And increasingly for hydrogen, for processing, storage and transportation.


Here at the ENERGY HUB, we are making a major contribution to the transformation of the German energy supply. And could meet up to two thirds of Germany’s H₂ demand as early as 2031.

Our Region


Three counties: one region. With a lot of wind, plenty of water and unique know-how. Together, we are ready to take on a central role in the European energy supply. As a centre of hydrogen expertise – right by the North Sea.

Throughout history, people have tended to settle wherever they found a source. Most villages were built right by the water to be able to use it as sustenance, in transport and to generate energy. And locations directly behind the dyke are still considered among the best today.

Our region not only has plenty of room for new companies, it also offers opportunities for energy-intensive industries and processes. The path to decarbonisation starts here. Because we have the potential for innovative industrial concepts needed to optimise H2 production and utilisation.

If there’s one thing Wilhelmshaven has a lot of, it’s water. But it’s very green, as well, and has been since 1920, when our seaside health resort first opened. And today, almost half of our city is completely green. With agriculture – and lots of woods. Our city has green parks and even green beaches. And we’re also an official Fairtrade Town.

Can we save nature using what it gives us? We can – by harnessing the wind. Here on the North Sea coast, that’s one thing we have in abundance: clean and boundless. The routes that lead to our region from wind farms in the German Bight, in Norway and Scotland are short: we deliver energy to the places that need it – and the rest, we store.

Even though we are not able to reach climate targets using energy generated exclusively from wind power at the moment, it still plays a key role in the energy transition: as a provider of energy to produce green hydrogen. Onshore – or even better: in the turbines themselves.
