Networking and Discussion Arena Berlin, 14 May 2024
National topics of the energy transition
The ENERGY HUB Port of Wilhelmshaven is an energy centre of the future. And a centre of excellence. For the whole country.
14 May 2024 – Once again, we would like to talk to you about the challenges of the energy energy transition - this time under the motto „Shaping transformation with foresight”.
We will get into conversation together on current challenges
- Everyone is talking about it - where do we stand on the subject of "acceleration"?
- What is essential for investment decisions and for the economic viability of hydrogen?
- Transformation also needs acceptance - what is reasonable for a region and what role does the circular economy play in the creation of value?
- It's about the "AND", not the "OR" - solidarity of the North for future security of supply.
For the event, we are guests of the Representation of the State of Lower Saxony to the Federal Government, In den Ministergärten 10, 10117 Berlin.

Current planning status
One challenge of the transformation process surrounding a sustainable and diverse energy supply is changing authorisation procedures that nevertheless take all interests into account appropriately. In Wilhelmshaven, the construction and connection of the first LNG terminal involved solving engineering and administrative tasks in just a few months that would actually take years. Questions that outline the framework of the panel: What went well here and can we transfer the findings into future decision-making/authorisation processes? What should we critically scrutinise and adapt? What should we intensify in order to reinforce strengths? Are there processes that we can use to orientate ourselves by looking beyond the national horizon?
Moderator: Dr. Robert Stüwe
- Federal Ministry of Justice, Parliamentary State Secretary Benjamin Strasser
- Lower Saxony Minister for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection, Minister Christian Meyer
- Head of the Oldenburg State Trade Supervisory Office, Jerzy Gohlke
- Head of the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Defence and Nature Conservation, Anne Rickmeyer
- District Administrator District of Friesland, Sven Ambrosy
Podiumsbesetzung:
- Hannes Seidl, Marktbereichsleiter Nachhaltigkeit, Umwelt & Klimaschutz bei der PD - Berater der öffentlichen Hand
- Bärbel Heidebroek, Vorsitzende des Landesverbands Erneuerbare Energien (LEE)
"Carbon Capture and Storage" and/or "Carbon Capture and Utilisation" - two technical processes in which the capture of carbon dioxide in industrial (waste gas) processes is a necessary (transitional) process for Germany as an industrial location. CCS/CCU value chains are needed to accelerate the realisation of climate targets. This leads to the question of what is needed for the transport and storage of CO2 (CCS and CCU interim storage requirements) and whether CO2 is permanently necessary as a chemical (compound) element for energy sources to reach our goal?
Moderator: Correspondent/journalist Klaus Stratmann (Handelsblatt)
Pitch: Ole Erik Almlid, Director General of "Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO) and impulse video First Carbon Storage
- State Secretary Bjelland Eriksen, Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy

Which infrastructures are necessary in a climate-neutral Germany? How can we guarantee the import of at least 50 % of our energy requirements? What framework is needed to tackle the infrastructural challenges at the water's edge and inland today and tomorrow? Is the speed and associated financing of energy infrastructures - from generation to various transport routes to consumption - wholly or partly in the national interest? What regulatory framework conditions and measures do we need in order to achieve our national climate targets? When must energy infrastructure decisions be made at the latest in order to achieve these climate targets? A "yes" or "no" should be the result of a weighing-up process, which we want to initiate or strengthen at our panel.
Moderator: Dr. Kirsten Westphal, German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW)
Pitch: Uwe Oppitz / Spokesperson ENERGY HUB and John Niemann, 2nd Chairman of Wirtschaftsförderverein Jade e.V. and President of Wilhelmshavener Hafenwirtschaftsvereinigung e.V.

- Lower Saxony Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport, Building and Digitalisation, Olaf Lies
- District Administrator of the Wesermarsch district, Stephan Siefken
The hydrogen economy is not yet a sure-fire success. It is about the right technologies, viable business models and the necessary framework conditions. This applies to every stage of the value chain, from production, transport and storage right up to the use of hydrogen by consumers! For Germany as an industry location, it is particularly important that all stages of the hydrogen chain ramp up simultaneously and synchronously - an interlocking clockwork that must be brought up to speed quickly. The necessary framework conditions for this will be at the centre of the concluding panel discussion - also as a bracket of our event "Transformation processes as a national responsibility".
Greeting from MdB Siemte Möller
